Our raging river and hearty okra

When you watch the following videos, keep in mind that just one year earlier Brady and I stood at the bridge above this river and watched helplessly as fish flailed about in small pools in the middle, unable to go upstream or downstream, trapped. We felt terrible for them.

There was no water. We could walk many parts of this river as the bed was mostly dry.

Now you can see evidence of all the rain we've been having. Wow! What a difference.

But before that, I want to tell you I think okra is the heartiest plant ever. This one was broken in half by the hail we got and look, it has already grown new leaves! All the other okra plants survived with only a few leaves or branches gone and I have already harvested another bunch of okra.

Last year, most of my okra was eaten by deer and it recovered from that too!

    1. I know! Brady's out of town with his Dad, so I had to take video and pics to show it to him!

  2. We've had a very wet year as well with the springs around us consistently rising out of their banks. Okra--not my favorite veggie, but maybe I just need to find a way to eat it that I care for. How do you like to prepare it?

    1. It is so versatile. I have done fried which of course is really good, stewed with tomatoes and hot sauce over rice (YUM) and tomorrow I am making gumbo with it. I'd love to pickle some but I don't have an overflowing amount yet to do that. But I do like pickled okra from the store.

  3. We've had the same weather in Michigan. Last summer we had a severe drought and it was 20 degrees hotter than normal for weeks. This year we've had rain, rain and more rain. And it's been cold. We've barely made it out of the 60's this week. We had a record flood earlier this spring. Crazy!

    1. Wow, Michigan weather has been much like ours it sounds like. Mother Nature doesn't like playing mediocre, I guess.

  5. That is some really bad weather you guys have gotten. Look at the water! Well at least the fishes aren't dying. I've never planted okra but my parents have and I love to eat them. Hope you're having a great week.
