My homemade masterpiece. |
Not only is it cheap and made more healthfully than a restaurant, but you can kind of gourmet it up a little and be creative. I brushed the crust with a olive oil, then seasoned it with Italian herbs and garlic powder before I pre-baked it. You could use Cajun spices or barbecue spices or Head Country or season salt or even Parmesan cheese, whatever you feel like.

Our toppings on this one were 1/2 pound marinated browned ground venison and diced multi-colored peppers. You could use any kind of browned ground or cut-up cooked meat you've gotten on sale, and whatever veggies you have on hand like diced tomatoes, olives, mushrooms, onions, spinach.
Two packages of Walmart's pizza crust mix are $1.04. I get cheese for $3 per pound or less and maybe use half (and I usually put a mix of cheddar and mozzarella). And I use just a 1/4 cup or so of spaghetti sauce that I already have. So less than $5 for the whole thing, if that.
An easy, inexpensive, healthy and fun dinner!
I adore home made pizza!! I use to hate it because when we were kids and living in Hawaii in the 60's while my dad was stationed there, just about every Friday we would all get in the station wagon and head to the drive in theater. My mom would make home made pizza and after eating that every week, I got a sour taste in my mouth. After we moved to the states and the pizza chains became big, it took me awhile to get back to eating pizza again. I never looked back!! *LOL*
ReplyDeleteAnd you are right. Its much cheaper and you know what you are getting. I love to use turkey pepperoni when I make my pizza. Much less fat and tastes the same. But don't tell anyone you used it and see if they can taste the difference. hehehe
I just wish my kiddo liked it. He is SO funny about melted cheese, so I give him the same ingredients - cheese, bread, veggies - just not in pizza form, LOL. Pizza has the potential to be pretty healthy - protein, carb, veggies - if you're careful.
DeleteWe have made homemade pizza a few times. It turns out okay, but I hope that I can find a better recipe for the dough...I'm just not satisfied with how it turns out.
ReplyDeleteI haven't gone to making my own dough yet, just relying on old Great Value :)
DeleteI absolutely love homemade pizza. If you've got a Harris Teeter near you you've get to pick up their pizza dough balls. They have them pre-made in by the deli section and they are great. We add a little seasoning and garlic powder on the crust and bake away!
ReplyDeleteAw dang, we don't have a Harris Teeter. We have Dillons though, I'll bet they have a good dough ball in their deli.

Gosh, Lorelai, thanks so much! :)
DeleteWhat did you marinate your venison in? We eat a lot of that, and I'm always looking for new ways to use it.
ReplyDeleteMissy, I mix it with worcestershire, soy sauce, liquid smoke and Head Country seasoning (if you don't have that you could use anything, like salt, pepper, garlic, paprika, chili powder, BBQ seasoning, whatever). I put enough that it all stays in the meat (not runny) and any excess cooks out when you brown it. We have had great success with this. You could also add lemon juice and hubby has taken to throwing a shot of bourbon in there. It seems to take some of the wild flavor out. I marinate our deer steaks in more of the marinade, then fry them on the stove and oh my gosh they are fabulous!
DeleteI've never had venison before but your pizza looks delicious. I might try out your version with something different. I love pizza. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks :) I hadn't had venison until I married my hubby. He takes 2 deer a year here in KS. For me it works great since I don't eat beef. It is a lean protein and if cooked properly it tastes great.
DeleteI LOVE homemade pizza. I've never thought of adding different spices to the top. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ann. It's one of my favorite meals! Very versatile.
