We are so careful about what Brady eats but on the road to Colorado we saw huge bins of wonderful-looking colorful saltwater taffy.
I scooped up some for me and Brady picked out a few. As we went to pay, he said, "There's no egg?" (Just like the cream-of-chicken-soup incident).
I said, "I forgot to check." We walked back and sure enough. Egg whites.
Here is the base ingredients for Halfmoon Bay saltwater taffy:
"Base Ingredients for all taffy - corn
syrup, sugar, palm oil, egg whites, evaporated milk, malic acid, sea
salt, soy lecithin, natural and artificial flavor, and artificial color."
I am so grateful Brady is even more vigilant than I am. I guess it's because he's the one who throws up if we make a mistake. What a close one that would have made our travels much less pleasant.
If you live with food allergies, you have to keep it in your mind at all times. But as evidenced by me, that's really really hard.

I've often thought a peanut allergy would be scary. We're fortunate so far Brady's only response is throwing up (if he eats it) or breaking out (if he touches something that has egg on it). It's so hard to remember that it could be lurking in anything!
ReplyDeleteI don't have food allergies, but my dad was so allergic to shellfish that he couldn't be in the house if someone was cooking it. Really tough when you live on the Atlantic Ocean.
ReplyDeleteHe outgrew it, but I can remember a few scary trips to the hospital when he was caught by surprise.
Oh my goodness, Heather, I've never heard of someone so allergic just cooking it will get them! Wow. Though I made homemade hot sauce and cooking the vinegar made my eyes water, I guess it becomes an aerosol? I sure hope Brady outgrows this someday, but don't know if he can.
DeleteI have a son with lots of food sensitivities, although fortunately his reactions are not as severe as they used to be (so we are hopeful he will outgrow them someday). I would NOT have guessed that there would be egg white in salt water taffy. Uugh! Glad you avoided a close call!
ReplyDeleteI hope Brady will outgrow it. It's encouraging to hear your son's reactions have gotten better. His allergist when he was 4 said no, but from what I've read sometimes people do. I think he has other sensitivities too as he started coughing terrible after having grapes and we avoid most processed stuff.
