Snoopy's wise words: Be yourself

One of my brothers sent me a card for my birthday with a saying I thought could be a guide for how we all see ourselves. It is attributed to Snoopy. I always thought he was insightful for a dog.

Here it is:
You know, sometimes in this life we can feel out of place, an outsider, weird, different. In a small town, there are times I feel this very intensely.

We may not do, look, act or speak like other people. We may not live our lives the way they do, or believe as they do. What is easy for them may be hard for us, and vice versa. I think maybe that's okay, even if it's hard to see it sometimes. I firmly believe God made us all to be who we are, to bring something unique to the world for a purpose.

But the world doesn't always believe the same and so we can get beaten down if we aren't careful and vigilant. Or, worse yet, our kids can get beaten down. I wish the world wasn't this way, but I have seen it happen too many times to be in denial.

I heard someone say once that "God doesn't make mistakes." I believe it. He made me to be something special (and you too, of course). He gave me something precious to offer the world and gave my Brady something precious too.

Though we may struggle sometimes for our differences, we should not measure our worth by them. We are who we were meant to be. We are good enough for that reason alone.

We can only do our best, be our best, pray and strive to do better tomorrow. If we do that, no one can fault us. And Snoopy's right. They cannot tell us we're doing it wrong.

  2. I love the Synchroncity at UBC. I recently wrote an article that used the same advice, Be Yourself. Although, I used Oscar Wilde's awesome quote :-)

    Have a fabulous day!

  3. I love this! You are so right. I've definitely caught myself lately feeling worried about what people are going to think about me or what I've written in my blog if they disagree about something... But you can truly drive yourself crazy worrying about that! I love how you say, "We can only do our best, be our best, pray and strive to do better tomorrow." Just beautiful! Thank you.

  4. For 35 years I tried to be what I thought everyone else wanted me to be. Little by little I dropped what I thought I was supposed to be and let the freak flag fly. I'm a college educated stay at home mom with no plan or desire to return to the workforce which is the opposite of what I was brought up to believe I was suppose to do. At this point, I'm down with that :)

    1. That's a hard way to live :( Freak flag, LOL. I love that! It's certainly freeing and empowering when you just are who you are.

  5. I love that saying and the one that says. Be yourself! No one can do it like you! Too often we try to be something/someone we're not. Just be you!

  6. All of this is so absolutely true! We are each unique and different. We need to honor the differences and appreciate the similarities. We need to complete or compliment each other rather than compete with each other. Thanks for this article. Very good!

    1. Wouldn't it be nice if people accepted each other as they are :) It's a wonderful goal to strive for. And I love all the uniqueness in the word. It would be pretty boring otherwise. What I don't like is the judgment we sometimes find :(

  7. So true! I don't want to look or sound like others (I was not always this way) but I feel that by learning me, my voice and about what I want to do, that I am blossoming in to someone I never thought I would be (and that is a good thing).

    1. Knowing who you are is extremely powerful. My life has changed a lot too. Who are are gets way amplified in a small town, LOL, for good and not-so-good response sometimes.

  8. That's so true! It took me several years to figure that out and apply it to my life. I wish I'd known it when I was younger.
