Cicada music and firefly light show

Oh my gosh I love living in the country. I'm including two videos here I took the other night. They are of lightning bugs (or fireflys!) flashing in the deep dark woods near our house and the sound of cicadas in the background.

When I lived in Salt Lake City or Columbia, South Carolina, or even Port Charlotte, Florida, which was smaller but still a county of 150,000 people, I never saw anything like this. It's like my own private fireworks show from nature every night accompanied by the music of cicadas. It is beautiful and engages nearly all the senses:

Sight - the fireflys
Sound - the cicadas
Touch - a soft breeze
Smell - the trees and the country (which can range from dust to hay to rain to cow, LOL)

All that was missing was taste, though I could have picked a mulberry and had that too. Hope you enjoy the videos. Be sure to turn up the volume! And try it full screen too.

  1. I like that. I haven't seen fireflies like that since I was a kid in Louisiana.

  4. I've never seen fireflies, but I remember clearly the sound of cicadas from my time in Japan-the buzzing really gets into your brain!

    1. I didn't realize they had cicadas in Japan! Wow. I grew up here in KS so fireflies are embedded in my memory. I don't recall seeing them anywhere else I lived.

  5. We have lightning bugs in our backyard almost every night here in Michigan! And after our long winters, there's nothing like feeling a summer breeze on my arms and legs. Love it!

  6. This is how I grew up, and have always wished the same for my kids. Thankfully, even though we live in a bigger city now, our house backs up to a cornfield. The firefly show is outstanding. Cicadas...I've always loved the sound of them. It just sings Summer to me. I'm grateful my kids have had these experiences.

    1. How lucky to be near the cornfield! That attracts all kinds of interesting wildlife. You get the best of both worlds!

  7. That's interesting. They must come out in Kansas much later than here in Virginia. First week of June here was like that. They are still out, but not in as much force now. In mid-June, they were synching up and lighting up at once. Watch this video that was shot not far from here in the Smoky Mountains. You'll see them all doing their thing, then stopping completely for a few seconds ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhP1J96hekM

    1. Wow, that's cool. Some kind of communication going on there. They've been out here since early July, I think, and still going. It's been odd weather here though for a KS summer.
